Schools
Now with two world class climbing centres in the heart of Surrey and South London Craggy Island is delighted to work with schools to encourage children to climb. We wish to work with as many schools as possible. Both our centres can cater for school visits and there is great scope to use BOTH centres to extend what is offered to you.
Follows is a brief introduction to what we offer but please contact your local centre manager for further details.
Introduction:
Indoor Climbing is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. It
is a fun and exciting way to keep fit, improve confidence and get young
people interacting and working together.
Indoor climbing is accessible for all. There are no limits on ability or fitness levels so it really is suitable for everyone.
Apart from the physical benefit of climbing, there is a great opportunity to teach children responsibility, safety issues and to overcome fear. Add this to the huge mental achievement of attaining new heights of self achievement and indoor climbing comes out as top in many sport surveys asking children their preferred exercise and you have an ideal sport.
About Craggy Island:
Craggy Island is located in Guildford, Surrey and the London Borough
of Sutton. We
opened in September 2004 and have been providing quality climbing sessions
to many schools and groups throughout the South East of England – some
from even further afield!
Craggy Island has been working in conjunction with the education authorities to provide syllabus based physical education for schools from keystage 3, GCSE and A level.
All schools and groups can safely offer their young people this great way to exercise their bodies and minds. Craggy Island has been passed by the Surrey Education Department as a recognised approved venue.
About our instructors:
All of Craggy Island’s Instructors are highly trained and very
passionate about their sport. All our instructors complete a Site
Specific Training which ensures they have the correct skills and meet
our high standards of instructing. Most then go on to complete
the National Governing Body award for indoor climbing - CWA / SPA.
The Site Specific Training consists of the following modules:
- Group Management and Safety
- Kitting up and fitting of PPE
- Teaching Climbing Skills
- Working with young people and Child Protection
CRB checks are completed on our instructors to ensure that they are safe and suitable to work with young people. The Craggy Island Child Protection Policy is adhered to at all times.
