SPORT RELIEF! The Vertical Mile…!

March 20th, 2012 by Danie | No Comments | Filed in Craggy Island News

On Sunday 25th March Craggy Guildford will be hosting the Vertical Mile in support of Sport Relief 2012.

All monies raised on the day will go to Sport Relief so you can be sure that your hard work will get to those it’s intended for.

A mile is 1609 metres…  Maybe that doesn’t sound a lot to you if you’re a super hero… but In vertical terms, that’s 201 ascents of our top-rope walls here at Craggy which is certainly no walk (or run!) in the park!

Participants can either complete their mile as an individual (?!) or as part of a team.  There will also be the opportunity for members of the public with no previous experience of climbing to get involved on the day with their very own mile to contribute to!

Details of the day and information on how to register for the event can be found here!

Right, time to get training I reckon!

Sport Relief is an initiative of Comic Relief, registered charity 326568.

Craggy2 roadworks heads up!

March 16th, 2012 by Gareth | No Comments | Filed in Craggy Island News, Sutton News

Hi all,

A heads up if you are coming to Craggy2 over the next few weeks and will be arriving by car from a Southerly direction.

The section of the A2022 from slightly East of the junction with the A217 and the roundabouts at the Southern end of Woodmansterne Road will have roadworks commencing from Monday 19th March 2012 for a total of 9 weeks. The road will be open but subject to traffic light control as traffic will be restricted to a single carrigeway.

This may cause lengthy delays in both directions on the A2022 especially at peak traffic times so please look to take alternative routes – thankfully there a few!

Craggy2 freelance instructor training

March 9th, 2012 by Gareth | No Comments | Filed in Craggy Island News, Sutton News

Mark coaching at Bootcamp, Craggy2

Craggy2 Sutton is currently looking for freelance climbing  instructors to join our team. We are interested in anyone who has a passion for climbing and is keen to pass this on to our customers.

The role of an instructor is a vital and very important part of Craggy Island as they are normally the first person that the customer meets when they come climbing at the centre.

Freelance instructors teach a variety of courses from childrens Cave & Climb parties, to Intro Sessions or our regular Kids Club. We also do a lot of work with schools and youth groups. We are therefore looking for people who can communicate and instruct adults as well as childrens.

To become an instructor you will have to take part in our site specific training (SST) which is a 4 hour course that takes you through all of basics of teaching at our centre. Once you have taken the training you will then be required to complete a set amount of shadowing hours (this will depend on previous experience). Once completed you can then book in for an assessment.

Providing that you pass you will then be able to book yourself in for work at Craggy2 and teach our customers. The majority of the work is in the evening and at weekends although there is some work available during the daytime in the week. If you complete 10 hours of instructing at Craggy2 in a month you climb for free at both Craggy Islands the next month!

You do not need to have had previous instructing experience to book onto the course but you will need to be a competent climber.

The next course that we are running is on Wednesday 18th April 2012 from 17.30 – 21.30. The course costs £25.00 and to book you place please call the Craggy2 Reception team on 01483 540 887.

If you would like more information then please contact gareth@craggy-island.com

Leading League – Round 2

March 7th, 2012 by Ben | No Comments | Filed in Craggy Island News, Guildford News, Route Setting

The comp wall is being re-set this week so that means that it is time for Round 2 of the leading league. There will be some competition routes up from tonight, 7th March and all routes will be up by Friday 9th March. The competition will finish 6 weeks later on the 20th April. It will run with the same format as the last round with 5 routes per category.

Although it is a competition it is definitely not all about winning. Taking part in a competition is a great way to improve your climbing and give you a focus when down at the wall, it will also give you something to work towards in between each competition and will be a great way to compare your progress in between the comp wall sets.

Rules

 - You can have as many goes on each route as you like but the less goes that you complete the route in, the more points that you get. A maximum of 100 points per climb is awarded for those who complete the route on their first go.

-An ascent counts as climbing the route from the bottom to the top, clipping all the quickdraws on the way and without sitting/resting on the rope.

- If you fall off an attempt you should ideally lower straight down to the ground and not practice any of the moves higher up.

- This is a fun competition and we are leaving it up to you to mark your own scorecards and be honest with how many attempts it has taken you.

- There are 5 different categories and prizes will be awarded to the winners of each, with spot prizes given out to those who we deem have tried the hardest!

Scorecards cost just £1.50 or free if you are a 3 star member, plus your normal entry and it is then up to you to keep hold of your scorecard and log each ascent. At the end of the 6 weeks or when ever you have finished you just had your scorecard in and we add it up.

The categories are as follows; Male, Female, Junior (Under 16) and Veteran (40+) which range from grades 5+ – 7A  and a special Elite category which has climbs between 6C – 8A.

We are also pleased to announce that Wild Country have agreed to sponsor this round so there will be some great prizes up for grabs. Check them out here www.wildcountry.co.uk

If you are interested in entering or would like some more information then please have a chat with our reception team on your next visit!
