Our ever-popular Kids Clubs run each term and are a fantasic way of getting kids aged 5-16 years climbing our walls under the supervision of our Instructors!

After requests from a number of parents, we would like to keep you as up to date as possible on the number of spaces we have left on our clubs.  So, if you’re thinking of booking we’ll help to make sure you don’t miss out. 

Don’t forget that you need to complete a new Parental Consent Form for the new term!  You should have been sent one when you booked but if not, you can download one here and bring it with you on the first day of term.

The inaugural Surrey Youth Climbing Festival was held at Craggy Island indoor climbing centre in Guildford on saturday 21st April. The festival is the brainchild of Danielle Rushmer the general manager of the Craggy Island Group, who was herself a regional champion climber as a child. Danie explains, “every year we host the ‘British Youth Climbing Series’ competition at the centre, but outside of our climbing world it has a fairly low profile and yet here are our possible future olympians (climbing will feature as an olympic sport in 2016) competing at the highest level in Guildford. So I built the festival to coincide with the competition so that budding new climbers can be inspired by the fantastic standard of climbing being demonstrated by the regions top young climbers. To enable this we provided 78 places to young people to have an hours instructed climbing for only £5 and a free session to our chosen local charity for the day The Matrix Trust. Their aim, “to facilitate creative projects, cooperative youth work and student work and to help the community in Guildford support young people positively”.

The competition itself attracted the best young climbers from the region from as far afield as Reading, North London and Southampton, attracting a record number of 130 competitors and was coordinated and judged by the British Mountaineering Council. The competition format is based on four age groups each having to complete 3 boulder climbs and 3 route climbs that were designed to increase in difficulty, with points gained depending on how high they managed to climb on each of the problems. All of which were carefully set by Craggy Islands route setter and former world champion boulderer Mark Croxall. Mark said, “the difficulty in setting these type of problems is making the competition fun for the kids but hard enough to really separate who is the best”. The series winners will go onto compete at the nationals to be held in Scotland and possible selection for the British Team. Britain has a strong presence on the international climbing scene with Shauna Coxey narrowly missing out on a medal in 4th place at the world cup bouldering championships held last week in China.

Our local high achievers are Isabelle Adams age 11 years of Guildford  group D 3rd place, Andrew Gee age 14 years of Burpham group B 3rd place and Jack Popplewell 16yrs of Woking (in his 1st competition) group A 2nd place all of whom attended the Craggy Island kids club.

A 3 hour long climbing, abseiling, fun and games session suitable for children aged 8 to 13 years.

Our instructors will be there at all times to make sure your kids are both safe and having fun!  There will be two 10 minute breaks during the session to give them a chance to rehydrate and re-fuel – drinks will be provided in our café and are included in the cost of the course.  Snacks can be purchased from the cafe or vending machines, however, if your child has any particular dietary requirements, please send them with something to eat or drink (there is a fridge available in needed).

Length of Session: 3 hours

What else is happening for kids this Easter Holiday?:

Taster Sessions:

Tasters are a really fun “Have-a-Go” session suitable for first time climbers aged between 8 and 16 years.  They are a great way of getting an introduction to the exciting sport of indoor climbing and will challenge even the most adventurous youngsters!

Ratio: 1:6

Length of Session: 1 and a half hours

Price: £22.50 per person (includes all safety equipment. Rock Shoes can be hired for an extra £3.75 but are not essential)

Active Climb:

If you have a child aged between 5 and 7 years old then an Active Climb will give them the chance to have a go at climbing here at Craggy. This session runs at a lower ratio to ensure that each child gets as much support and encouragement as possible during their climbs. Parents and older siblings can even join in too.

Ratio: 1:4

Length of Session: 1 hour

Price: £18 per person (includes all safety equipment. Rock Shoes can be hired for an extra £3.75 but are not essential)

Private Tuition:

If you’re looking for something more specific; perhaps you want to learn to climb too, give the kids a tougher challenge or simply want your instructor’s undivided attention then a Private session is the thing for you!

You can book each session for up to 4 people and it will be completely tailored to your requirements.

Ratio: 1:up to 4

Price: 1 person – £40 per hour, 2 people – £50 per hour, 3 people – £60 per hour and 4 people – £70 per hour (includes all safety equipment. Rock Shoes can be hired for an extra £3.75 but are not essential)

With the summer holidays now over we are looking forward to our kids club returning for the Autumn term.

We have a lot of exciting activities planned for this term and we also have the revealing of our brand new Kids Club sheets.

We are now running our very popular Mini Kids Club on Sundays as well starting from the 1st May. The course will be from 11.45am – 12.45pm.

The Mini Kids club was devised for our youngest climbers aged between 5 and 7 years old. Each trained instructor has a maximum of four children in their care and will gently encourage them to climb to the best of their abilities. Everyone receives an award sheet and as they achieve climbs they receive rainbow stamps to climb towards their pot of gold!

Before you know it, you have a small climber in the family!

The club runs once a week during school term with a break for half term and lasts eleven weeks. Each weekly session lasts one hour and includes instruction and hire equipment apart from climbing shoes which can be hired for £3 a pair.

We are opening this up to everyone, but places are limited so get in contact with our reception for more information and to book on. The cost is £112.00 for the whole 11 weeks.
