Leading League – Round 2

March 7th, 2012 by Ben | No Comments | Filed in Craggy Island News, Guildford News, Route Setting

The comp wall is being re-set this week so that means that it is time for Round 2 of the leading league. There will be some competition routes up from tonight, 7th March and all routes will be up by Friday 9th March. The competition will finish 6 weeks later on the 20th April. It will run with the same format as the last round with 5 routes per category.

Although it is a competition it is definitely not all about winning. Taking part in a competition is a great way to improve your climbing and give you a focus when down at the wall, it will also give you something to work towards in between each competition and will be a great way to compare your progress in between the comp wall sets.

Rules

 - You can have as many goes on each route as you like but the less goes that you complete the route in, the more points that you get. A maximum of 100 points per climb is awarded for those who complete the route on their first go.

-An ascent counts as climbing the route from the bottom to the top, clipping all the quickdraws on the way and without sitting/resting on the rope.

- If you fall off an attempt you should ideally lower straight down to the ground and not practice any of the moves higher up.

- This is a fun competition and we are leaving it up to you to mark your own scorecards and be honest with how many attempts it has taken you.

- There are 5 different categories and prizes will be awarded to the winners of each, with spot prizes given out to those who we deem have tried the hardest!

Scorecards cost just £1.50 or free if you are a 3 star member, plus your normal entry and it is then up to you to keep hold of your scorecard and log each ascent. At the end of the 6 weeks or when ever you have finished you just had your scorecard in and we add it up.

The categories are as follows; Male, Female, Junior (Under 16) and Veteran (40+) which range from grades 5+ – 7A  and a special Elite category which has climbs between 6C – 8A.

We are also pleased to announce that Wild Country have agreed to sponsor this round so there will be some great prizes up for grabs. Check them out here www.wildcountry.co.uk

If you are interested in entering or would like some more information then please have a chat with our reception team on your next visit!

Are you a Social Climber…? Brand new Friday morning session!!

January 31st, 2012 by Danie | No Comments | Filed in Craggy Island News, Guildford News, Newsletter

Craggy Island is known as the friendly wall. Why? Well, mostly because we always intended to have a wall with an open environment, where people could climb together in a welcoming space, and also to have friendly and motivated staff to help our customers get the best out of their climbing experience. Climbing is FUN!

As part of this culture that we’ve nursed along, various social groups began springing up…  Some were a group of friends already, work colleagues with a common interest or indivduals that met up during their regular sessions.  We really enjoyed watching all these people come together which is why, in 2005, we arranged the first Ladies Session headed up by our instructor Claire Walker.  Due to Claire’s never-ending enthusiasm for the sport and engaging with people we soon went on to create the Social Session (mostly to keep the boys quiet who at that time were missing out on all the fun!).

She was then joined by Andy Fairgrieve – another of our instructors with an inexhaustible interest in all things vertical (and he’s been climbing forevvvver which makes for some interesting tales).

Between them, and with Claire’s dedication to the Ladies Session also, both sessions have gone from strength to strength!  Even meaning that we have now introduced a new Social Session on Friday Mornings and Evenings which is hosted by another fab instructor of ours, Joe Byfield.

The secret…?  Getting people talking and introducing climbers to other climbers – it never fails!  Oh, and a free drink!!

The main aim of the sessions had always been to enable new climbers to come along and enjoy their first few climbs under the gentle supervision of our instructors.  However, people keep coming back - enjoying the banter and the opportunity to pick up hints and tips off our instructors on top of making new friends to climb with!

If this sounds like your kind of fun, why not come along?:

Ladies Session (no boys allowed!):

Monday mornings 10:00-12:00

Monday evenings 19:00-21:00

Social Session:

Wednesday evenings 19:00-21:00

New!  Friday mornings 10:00-12:00

Friday evenings 19:00-21:00

All sessions cost £10 per person with a free hot or cold drink from the cafe at the end of the session.

Rich is Leaving!

January 15th, 2012 by Ben | No Comments | Filed in Craggy Island News, Guildford News

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to one of the longest serving Craggy crew members today!

Rich who has been with the company for about 6 years now has decided it is time for a change and is moving on from the island.

He has promised us that he will be climbing regularly with us so you will no doubt still see him around the centre!

We are wishing him all the best with the future and whatever that may bring!

Here are a few shots of Rich from over the years (some showing a little bit more of his playful side!)
