Craggy2 Rock Room reset next week

December 14th, 2011 by Gareth | No Comments | Filed in Craggy Island News, Route Setting, Sutton News

Christmas will come early for Craggy2 as we get the company of our merry route setting elves next week in the Rock Room.

They’ll be hard at work setting from Monday 19th through to Wednesday 21st of December. So if you’ve any projects left in the Rock Room then now is the time to come down and finish them off in preparation of a whole room full of new routes!

A new set also means it’s time for Boulder League – so see you on Thursday 22nd December for the last comp of the year with festive prizes. For more details see the Craggy Island Facebook site. The unconfirmed reports that our very own Luke will be dressing up as Santa for the night are completely unfounded…

SIBL kicks off with record turnout at Craggy 2, Sutton

October 18th, 2011 by Cliff Hanger | No Comments | Filed in Craggy Island News, Route Setting, Sutton News

With 180 competitors Sundays event was the busiest they have ever had and attracted a very high standard of competitor, including Gaz Parry and John Partridge from the British Bouldering Team. However the competition remains a fun outing and a great opportunity to pit your bouldering skills against your friends and other enthusiasts. The team at Craggy worked all week hosting the tri services bouldering league on the Wednesday and then the SIBL on the Sunday, with all routes set specifically for each event by Mark Croxall, Mike Hadcocks and Danie Rushmer. For SIBL depending on the category entered you get a colour coded score card and then your left to find the routes tagged with the colour of your card. Craggy 2 crew along with the SIBL team were on hand to help entrants find their way about the myriad of walls and what could have been chaotic (due to the high numbers), was incredibly well ordered and fun for juniors as well as the adults!

The Southern Indoor Bouldering League has been in existence in one form or another for 20 years and has recently been given a revamp by Sam Johnson who took it on in 2009. However this year other commitments meant that Sam passed the baton on to David Andrews, although a relative new comer to bouldering, has big plans to expand the series. “Craggy 2 is such an amazing venue, the level of organisation and quality of the routes is incredible and a great place to start the series,” says David who has pulled together an impressive list of sponsors and high profile venues for this season’s 6 competitions and urges anyone who is toying with the idea to get involved. A view echoed by Gareth Squire centre manager at Craggy2, “competitions and especially SIBL are especially welcome at our wall as they give a real sense of focus to boulderers especially during the hard winter months where getting outside can seem a distant goal”. Prizes were donated by Rock On and Sportiva who had a big presence on the day setting routes and with a boot demo respectively.

We were especially proud that Craggy members turned out to compete in such numbers and featured so well in Tiffany, Vicky, and Lucy Bradbury in the juniors, who has been with us through our kids clubs and Craghoppers. We are yet to get the full results from SIBL, so if you were wondering where you came, so are we! I have been assured by David Andrews that the full results will be found on www.sibl.co.uk in the next few days.

October 9th, 2011 by Gareth | No Comments | Filed in Craggy Island News, Newsletter, Sutton News

Round 1 of the Southern Indoor Bouldering League comes to Craggy2 (Sutton) on Sunday 16th of October 2011!

SIBL is a fun series of competitions that runs throughout the South of England each year.  It is aimed at climbers of all standards with grades starting at V0 (font 3+).  The Round held at Craggy2 each year is one of the most highly regarded rounds, both for the quality of the venue and also for the quality of the route setting.  This year we’ve got Mark Croxall setting the problems again so there is sure to be the usual variety of weird and wonderful for climbers of all grades to contend with!

Is SIBL just for serious competitors?
No! The beauty of SIBL is that it’s open to all and whilst still having a competitive serious side everyone has the chance to win with spot prizes awarded through out the day. Also, you’re guaranteed a great atmosphere with climbers of all abilities trying to solve the problems. It’s a fun day out, above and beyond anything else.

How do I get involved?
It’s really simple, you can either pay for entry on the day, which is £15.00 for seniors or £10.00 for juniors or pre-register for all 6 rounds at http://www.sibl.co.uk/register_2008.htm and get 1 round for free! If you are not competing you can still come down to Craggy2 and watch as the comp unfolds. Registration starts at 9:30 with the juniors comp starting at 11:00 and seniors at 12:00.

Anything else I need to know?
Craggy2 will be closed for public climbing until 17:00 on the day, with the comp routes being opened up for climbing straight after the awards ceremony. For full details about SIBL see www.sibl.co.uk
