Background
Sutton
in South London now has its own dedicated Indoor Bouldering and Caving
centre.
The brand new bouldering wall has been designed to appeal to beginners through to the worlds best bouldering enthusiasts, with three rooms - Easy, Medium and Hard.
Easy. The Adventure room has an extensive low level wall with routes traversing its various angles and boulders. These walls hide a secret! Behind them lies a labyrinth of twisting and turning tunnels, with hidden caves and chambers. Are you brave enough to enter?
Medium. The Rock Room has been created to bring the best out of the new and improving climber with a variety of caves, roofs, overhangs and slabs to a height of 4.5 metres. The main feature of this room however is the real rock boulders at its center, these have been sculpted to recreate limestone, slate and gritstone and is totally unique. The climbing routes here are graded easy, medium, hard and very hard.
Hard. The comp room has been designed to appeal to the serious boulderers, with input from Mark Croxall (British Team member and 2005 World Bouldering Champion). The room has a range of ever steepening angles, training boards including (probably) the worlds highest campus, a 2 degree slab, barrel, diamond and loads of other stuff. The routes here are graded with Font grades.
Craggy Island Sutton is built in the shell of an old squash complex. Visitors are greeted at first floor level by a bright reception area for registration, information, courses and equipment hire, which also includes an area to buy hot and cold drinks and snacks and also a spacious chill out area. Adjacent to the entrance is a view over the Adventure room climbing and caving complex and the main cave entrance. . . very useful for parents to see their children having fun!
Oh yes, and a few steps away at the golf clubhouse next door all our
members and visitors are welcome to use the cafe restaurant and bar!
New to climbing? At Craggy Sutton we run daily hour
long sessions designed to introduce you to the safe use of the centre.
The instructed session covers the centre rules, etiquette of bouldering,
safe practice, how the grading system works. . . and then focuses on
getting you started with advice on climbing technique. These sessions
need to be booked in advance to avoid disappointment and are £15
per person.
Experienced climbers and boulderers? All you need
do is pay the relevant entry price
and you can climb. If you are already a Craggy Island member there is
no need for you to join Craggy2 separately, your card also applies here.
If you are not a Craggy member, why not join now and benefit from reduced
entry prices at both walls and be welcomed to the Craggy family.
When you visit Craggy Island for the first time we will ask you to fill in a registration form. This will ask for your contact details and ask you to agree to our terms and conditions, the BMC participation statement and waiver.
(Please note that if you are originally registered at Sutton you will still need to pass the roped climbing assessment at Guildford if you want to climb there due to it being roped climbing)
